What will 3D printing bring to Fashion? 3D printing will open up creative fields in the fashion industry that will challenge traditional techniques. Couture clothes which are more traditionally made is defined as items made for you that fit your body and they get quite expensive, rare and difficult to obtain. Yet with 3D printing, there is the freedom to download and print customizable designs at the comfort of your own home. It is also less likely to have waste unlike with textiles there’s a lot of waste made. As Bolton states ‘’ It has the ability to mould exactly to your measurements, it’s environmentally friendly too’’ ( Online Article: Bloomberg, 2016) Danit Peleg a fashion designer has brought out the first 3D-printed fashion collection which is printed entirely using home printers alongside a 3D rendering software called Blender. These designs have the strength and flexibility for everyday wear but it could still improve in the long run in terms of comfort. Peleg spent over nine months in search for the ideal filament which is suitable for her 3D printed fashion collection. She discovered that filaflex was the answer, this is a Spanish-made filament that is strong and ultra- flexible plastic with the capacity to be crafted into a full apparel range along with shoes. Alongside the 3D printed apparels, many have already gravitated towards 3D printed jewelleries and athletic wear which have a greater success. We live in a world of fast fashion and in order to keep up with the trends clothing companies produce more products than ever. A few of our favourite retail stores have unethical ways of producing their products using sweatshops with cheap labour, back breaking, inhumane conditions. Examples of shops would be H&M, Zara, Urban Outfitters and even shoe companies such as Aldo. With 3D printers emerging in the technological world, this is something big that companies working in apparel can jump into to avoid unethical views that many consumers feel strongly about.
